Normal mode is home
Think of normal mode as Helix’s default state — the place you return to between bursts of typing. Helix starts in normal mode, and as you get comfortable, you’ll naturally fall back to it whenever you’re not actively entering text.
To get back to normal mode, hit the Escape key. Wherever you are in
Helix, you can generally keep hitting Escape until the statusline reads
NOR again — it’s the universal “take me home” key.
This might seem like ceremony, but it reflects how editing actually works: most of the time you’re navigating and reshaping existing text, not typing new text. Normal mode puts all of that power on ordinary keys.
Try it in the editor: hit Escape (nothing changes — you’re already home),
then poke a few keys and watch what normal mode does with them.
